DEGROWTH: El Viaje del Caracol

The DEGROWTH – El Viaje del Caracol project is a Europe-wide initiative that connects youth with art, science, and the vision of a socially just and ecologically sustainable future. Through workshops, artistic creation, and action in three diverse local contexts – including the island of Syros – young people aged 18–30 are empowered to reimagine life based on the principles of “Buen Vivir” and the degrowth paradigm. Four organizations from different European countries collaborate to co-create an innovative, replicable methodology that merges education, art, and activism in the face of climate urgency.

What makes this project crucial is its direct engagement with today’s ecological and social emergencies. At a time when scientific consensus points to the need for radical change in consumption and production, DEGROWTH offers an alternative path: living with less, but more meaningfully – emphasizing collective resilience, environmental responsibility, and creative solidarity. Art becomes a medium for political imagination and critical reflection, allowing new narratives to emerge beyond mainstream growth-oriented ideologies.

This is not just a youth project – it speaks to society at large. Through public exhibitions, open workshops, and participation in the “School of Ecology,” DEGROWTH activates intergenerational and intercultural dialogue on care, democracy, and environmental justice. Its outcomes will be compiled into a digital open-access repository, enabling communities and organizations across Europe to adopt and adapt its methodology and amplify its impact.

Project Title

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia. It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth.
